Description

Anglet (“ Angelu” in Basque language) is a large town and the city is built around several “quartiers”.  The ocean and the pine woods (“pignadas”) made it famous in the 19th century when it became popular to take holidays by the sea.  Nowadays, tourism still plays a major role in the city, with its 9 beaches, large green parks and wooded areas.  The beaches are popular among surfers and several surf contests take place yearly.  The abundant and easily accessible outdoor space provide the perfect setting for activities such as cycling, rollerblading, jogging, hiking to name a few.

Geography and Climate :

Anglet covers a whole 26,93 km2 of land.

10% of the city is covered by woods and parks and the beautiful coast is 4,5 km long.

The south end of the river Adour flows into the ocean in Anglet, (flowing from the small village of Tarnos).

It's in Anglet where the “Côte d'Argent” ends (which begins 200km up north in Soulac) at the “Grotte d'Amour”.  After this point, the coast becomes rockier and the sandy beaches tend to disappear. This I officially where the French “Côte Basque” Basque Coast, begins.

Anglet has joined forces with its neighbouring towns to be part of  “Communauté agglomeration Côte Basque-Adour”.  Along with Bayonne and Biarritz, the three cities share common facilities, such as transport and work together to promote the area.  The airport Biarritz-Anglet-Bayonne is located on the city's territory.

Tourism :

The main activities in Anglet revolve around the ocean and the woods.

There are eleven beaches in Anglet, all of them with a different character.  Whether you want to go sunbathing or surfing, you'll find your dream spot (see below for more information).  All the beaches have lifeguards during the summer unless mentionned.  You can find surf and other water-based sports schools on almost all of the beaches in Anglet.

Woods and parks play an important part in Anglet's identity.  You can take a walk or a ride on the numerous paths that run through the three woods (Lazaret Forest, Pignada Forest, and Chiberta Forest).  There is also sports equipment and a Forest Adventure Course “accrobranche” path.  Pay a visit to the ecological park Izadia to discover the local faune and flora.  You can also see exotic plants which have adapted to the local climate in Montaury Park.  If you’re more interested in simply relaxing, Atlanthal thalassotherapy institute provides various cures and relaxation formulas.

The Golf du Chibera offers two different golf courses (one 9-hole and one 18-hole) situated between woods and the ocean.

Beaches :

Plage du VVF : nice beach under the lighthouse of the cap St Martin cliff. This beach has special equipment for disabled people.

Plage du Club : This little beach is only accessible when the tide is low ! Perhaps more of an “urban” beach, it is located near the “Chambre d'amour” quarter.

Plage des Sables d'Or : This beach is located near “Le quartier de la Chambre d'amour”.  About forty restaurants stand along the beach, and there are also many beach volley grounds and other sports facilities.  It is a key location for events during the summer.

Plage de Marinella : On this beach you can meet all kind of tourists, from families to experimented surfers.

Plage des Corsaires : Popular beach amongt youth with selected green areas to play.

Plage de la Grande Madrague et de la Petite Madrague : Really popular beaches, with green areas for ball sports. La “Plage de la Petite Madrague” is seen as one of the trendiest of Anglet.

Plage de l'Ocean : Quiet beach for nature lovers.

Plage des Dunes : This beach is a surfers favourite as it's not too busy.  The access is difficult as there is no car park and the only access to the beach is an underpass.  This beach is not supervised by lifeguards.

Plage des Cavaliers : Perhaps the most famous beach of Anglet with its powerful waves.  Several surf championships take place here.  You can also enjoy the thalassotherapy centre, or the green areas and the playground for children.

Plage de la Barre : Smallest beach of Anglet, located on the mouth of the Adour river.  It's a really peaceful beach, near the ecological park Izadia and the skate park.

Cuisine :

The market take place twice a week on Thursday and Sunday mornings on the Place du Quintaou. You may find all kinds of local products including seafood and the famous “pibales” (young eels).  An organic market takes place every Saturday morning (99 avenue de l'Adour).

Economy :

Tourism is an important activity of the city, but the food processing companies still play a large part in the local economy as well as sports industries (mainly in boardsports) and aeronautics.  The airport has also had a positive impact on local economy.  In 2008, there was almost 4000 companies located in Anglet.

Transport :

A bus network runs through Bayonne, Biarritz and Anglet, linking the three cities and the airport. Direct lines runs from the centre of Anglet to stations of Biarritz and Bayonne, and another one to the airport. The buses pick and drop from the town  to the beaches.

Anglet has developed a network of cycle paths and the city lends bicycles for free.
