Description:
The Musée de Beaux Arts of Bordeaux is one of the largest in France outside Paris and the most important in fine art in Aquitaine. The museum was created by Napoleon Boneparte in 1801 as part of an initiative to showcase works from ancient royal collections as well as those acquired through war. Today, the museum has an extensive collection of western works of art from the Rennaissance to present day.
The museum is located in a section of the Palais Rohan, which is also part of the City Hall of Bordeaux.
Paintings, sculptures and drawings from artists such as Matisse, Rubens and Van Goyan are exposed alongside local Bordelais artists Odilon Redon, Albert Marquet and André Lhote.
Like the majority of Bordeaux museums, the Musée des Beaux Arts has a permanent collection as well as showing temporary collections many of which are displayed in the Fine Arts Gallery located opposite the museum. It also hosts various events throughout the year including concerts, conferences, projections and debates.
