The Association “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France” aims to promote and preserve the exceptional heritage of of the villages selected. They intend to avoid these beautiful villages turning into soulless museums or on the other hand becoming too gimmicky. It is to ensure that they remain lively hearts of local life therefore avoiding the mass exodus from the country which has claimed many rural parts of France. In order to become part of “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France”, villages must go through a very strict evaluation process and meet the standards set.
Quality, Reputation and Development
A village must pass a 30 point quality check and sign a quality charter ensuring it maintains the expected standards.
The reputation of the village is maintained by the high quality image of the association of is identified by its registered trademark.
Villages must continually work to develop the economy and structure to the high level of the association.
